Roxanna Marie Gandolfe

My art serves as a medium through which I navigate the complexities of human emotion and identity in ways my words cannot. Operating in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional space allows me to express my ideas on multiple levels, whether it's through sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, or drawing, each piece reflects my innermost thoughts and ideas along with how I indulge others.

I have an intense passion for the importance of human connection and my art delves into themes of love, loss, mental illness, and femininity, as well as the raw emotion and intimacy that comes with these experiences. As a woman navigating a world that is shaped by gender expectations and stereotypes, I find myself deeply invested in ideas that challenge societal norms and redefine the boundaries of femininity while simultaneously embracing my womanhood and the strength and vulnerability that come with it.

The materials in my work extend beyond the typical mediums. I am always looking to explore new mediums and am always eager to see how to incorporate something that captivates me into my work. In my sculptures, I embrace a wide range of materials, from traditional clay bodies to works made of metal, each chosen for its unique qualities and symbolism.

Yet, some of the most intriguing materials to me are from nature, from twisted branches to ephemeral mushrooms and mosses. I find inspiration in the natural world and infusing it into my work gives me a sense of tangibility to the idea of the relationship between humans and nature.

Similarly, in my two-dimensional work, I seek out natural pigments and dyes derived from plants, rocks, and even my own blood. These intimate materials not only add richness to my palette but also create a deeper connection between myself, my art, and the world around me.

In my creative practice, I aim to foster empathy and invite social change. As I continue to grow as an artist and explore new materials and techniques, my art remains grounded in a deep connection to the natural world and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. I hope that through my work, I can inspire others to cultivate a deeper connection to the world around them and embrace the transformative power of art.
